Barbara Sue Hitchcock Dyer (Ms. Sue) was born on June 13, 1940 in Putnam County, Tennessee to Irene Hitchcock Pinion. Ms. Sue was reared in Putnam County by her grandparents Sam and Sue Hitchcock. She was a 1958 graduate of Cookeville Central High School and attended Tennessee Polytechnic Institute now Tennessee Technological University. On July 8, 1960 she married her partner in life Marvin Dyer. She and Marvin are the parents of Michael E. Dyer and wife Martha Dyer of Dayton, Tennessee, Rhonda M. Bartlett and husband Steve Bartlett of Cookeville, Tennessee. Sue loved everyone and everyone who was privileged to know her loved her. She was happiest when her house was filled with her children and grandchildren. For many years she also enjoyed weekend camping with Marvin. Sue knew Jesus as her Lord and Savior and devoted her life to sharing Him with others. She spent many years of her life as a member of the Stone Seminary Freewill Baptist Church where she served as Treasurer and Sunday School Teacher to many small children. Sue spent a lifetime of service to her family and community. Sue served as an office manager for husband Marvin for the past twelve years. Marvin is an ICC Building Codes Inspector for the City of Celina, Clay County, the City of Spring City, Rhea County and the City of Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee. Ms. Sue previously served as a grant writer for the Upper Cumberland Development District for over ten years, where she excelled in assisting rural communities with their grant writing needs. She assembled pertinent income and demographic data, compiled the grant application and administered the grant funds for the thirteen Upper Cumberland counties and cities. Ms. Sue was well respected by all funding authorities including local, state, regional and national sources. Previous to her contributions to the Upper Cumberland Development District, Sue was employed by the USDA, Farmers Home Administration (Now Rural Development) as a District Administrative Assistant and the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) for thirty-one years where she retired from federal service. Ms. Sue is survived by her husband of sixty-one years, Marvin Dyer of Cookeville; one son, Michael and Martha Dyer; daughter, Rhonda and Steve Bartlett of Cookeville; one sister, Barbara Jane (Pinion) and Patrick Micol of Wayne, Michigan; Grandchildren, Justin Bartlett of Cookeville, Mary Beth Dyer and Josh Norris of Spring City, Tennessee, Mallory Dyer and Tyler Brock of Knoxville, Stephen and Sierra Bartlett of Monterey, Tennessee and Emily Bartlett and Brandon Harville of Cookeville, Tennessee; great grandchildren, Maylee Kate & Raelynn Norris and Hayes Brock, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces and great nephews. Sue was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents who reared her as their own child, Sam and Susan Hitchcock, her mother Irene Hitchcock Pinion, sister Anna Lou Pinion Rawson, fifteen Hitchcock siblings of which the younger of these considered Sue their sister and six step siblings. To continue her legacy of Christian love and service, memorial donations could be made to Gideons International where one hundred percent of donations will be used to provide Bibles that will be placed in hotel rooms in hope of leading others to Christ. The family wished to invite everyone for visitation on Monday July 19th from 5-8 pm and Tuesday from 9 - 11 am in the Dyer Chapel of Hooper Huddleston Horner Funeral Home. The memorial service was conducted Tuesday July 20th at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. The memorial service was delivered by Pastor Gary Farris. Interment followed in Crest Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Cookeville, Tennessee. Those honored to be pallbearers were Justin Bartlett, Stephen Bartlett, Brandon Harville, Josh Norris, Tyler Brock, Dusty Tidwell and Tim Hitchcock.
