LT. Colonel (Ret.) William Penn "Bill"� Goodman 90 of Cookeville Tennessee, died Monday, January 7, 2013 at Highlands Medical Center, Sparta TN following a brief illness. He was born April 29, 1922 in Kyles Ford, Tennessee to the late Emory and Martha Baker Goodman. He graduated from Hancock County High School in 1939. Mr. Goodman served in the United States Army, in the European Theater, and was honorably discharged in 1946. He graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1949. He also studied at Georgetown School of Foreign Affairs and The Hague Academy of International Law. Mr. Goodman served in the Army Judge Advocate General Corp from 1950-1966, having served in South Korea and Guam during the Korean Conflict. During his service he was awarded the following medals: Bronze Star Medal; American Campaign Medal; European-African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with Bronze Star; WWII Victory Medal; Army of Occupation Medal with Germany Clasp; National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star: Korean Service Medal; United Nations Service Medal; and Honorable service Lapel Button WWII. He was honorably discharged August 1, 1966 as a Lt Colonel. From there he served as Deputy Law Director in Knoxville before moving to Cookeville in 1967 to teach at Tennessee Tech University in the College of Business. He was professor of Business Law until his retirement in 1986. He was a long-time member of Cookeville First Baptist Church. Mr. Goodman is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Jane Moles Goodman (whom he married March 12, 1956 in Staunton, VA.) He is also survived by two daughters, Jane Dickerson of Birmingham, Alabama and Penny Varner (Jim) of Tampa, Florida and four grandchildren, William Dickerson and Robert Dickerson, both of Birmingham and Catherine Varner and Sarah Varner both of Tampa. Other survivors include one brother Clarence E. Goodman, Jr. (Vivian) of Shreveport, LA and two sisters Lucille Reed of Morristown, TN and Inez McBee (John) of Kingsport, TN and sister in law, Carolyn Goodman of Knoxville. He is also survived by special family friend Meredith Thompson Devereaux (Matt) of Knoxville, TN. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. George Goodman. Visitation will be in Cookeville, at Hooper Huddleston Horner Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 from 1-3 pm CST with the funeral immediately following with Dr. Randall Adkisson, Rev. Bill Stone, and Rev. Charles Hutchinson officiating. Visitation will also be at Christian Sells Funeral Home in Rogersville TN from 11-1pm EST on Thursday January 10, 2013 followed by a short service with Dr. Randall Adkisson officiating. Interment will be at McKinney Cemetery in Rogersville immediately following the service. Pallbearers are Matt Devereaux, Robert Dickerson, William Dickerson, Wayland Hawkins, Wade Raines and Frank Tittle. Honorary Pallbearers are Dr. James Barger and the Mature Adult Sunday School class at First Baptist Church in Cookeville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 18 S. Walnut Ave, Cookeville, TN 38501; Alzheimer"�s Tennessee 1459 Interstate Dr, Cookeville TN 38501 or TTU Foundation PO Box 1915 Cookeville TN 38501 or a charity of your choice.
