Curt Smith

Graveside services and interment for Dr. Curt H. Smith, 72, of Cookeville will be held Sunday, August 5 at 2 p.m. in Crest Lawn Cemetery. Rev. Mike Head, Associate Pastor of First Baptist Church Cookeville, will officiate. The family will receive friends Saturday 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Mr. Smith died Friday morning, August 3, 2012 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. He was born April 16, 1940 to the late James Howard and Tena Delsie Taubert Smith. A Cookeville native, Dr. Smith, a cardiovascular surgeon, was a long time resident of Alexandria, LA, before returning to Cookeville to retire. Dr. Smith attended Cookeville primary and secondary schools and graduated from Cookeville Central High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Chemistry, from TTU and a MD degree from the University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis. Dr. Smith completed his internship in Oakland, CA after which he served two years in the U.S. Air Force. He then returned to Oakland, where he completed his Residency in General Surgery. Afterwards, he studied and performed peripheral vascular surgery under Alan Gathright, M.D. in San Francisco. Prior to moving to Alexandria, LA, Dr. Smith completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX, under the direction of Michael DeBakey, M.D. and George Morris, M.D. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a nephew, Mike Smith. Survivors include his brother, James L. Smith, D.D.S., and wife, Margaret of Cookeville; nephew, Christopher Smith of Osprey, FL; great niece, Amanda Smith, great nephews, Jared and William Smith all of Cookeville. Pallbearers will be Christopher Smith, Jared Smith, William Smith, Ernie Taubert, Jaco Chambers, Jack Borden, Jr., and Johnny Nash.
