Delmer Ray "Doc" Poteet, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on May 18, 2024, at the Tennessee State Veterans Home in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Born on March 16, 1935, in Kensington, Georgia, Doc lived a life marked by dedication, service, and a warm, engaging personality that left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Doc is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Thelma Irene Ballew Poteet; sons Don Poteet (Julie), Michael Poteet (Christina), Randall Poteet, and Gregory Poteet (Beth); daughters Denise Smith and Linda Irene Hill (David); his brother Donald Richard Poteet; and a legacy of numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews who will carry forward his spirit of generosity and kindness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Cordell Poteet and Lottie Hicks Poteet; brothers Robert, Charles, John, and Jim Poteet; and half-brother Eugene Ball.
Doc honorably retired after 28 years of service in the US Army as a military policeman, including two tours in Vietnam, where he demonstrated bravery and commitment to his country. His second retirement followed a fulfilling career with the US Postal Service in Smyrna, Tennessee, where he was known for his reliability and good humor.
Those who knew Doc will fondly remember him as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a friend to many, always ready with a smile and never at a loss for words. His character was as rich and vibrant as the stories he loved to share. A history buff, Doc was known for his extensive knowledge on a variety of subjects, always eager to engage in a good conversation or impart a fascinating historical fact.
Doc's interests went beyond his love for history. He was a true character in every sense of the word, with a zest for life that was contagious. His presence brought joy and laughter to those around him, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
