Sr. Doris Haynes Semmes, formerly of Savannah, GA, and Springfield, MO, passed into spirit at Signature Healthcare of Putnam County on Tuesday, August 16. She would have turned 87 years old on September 4. She was the youngest of three children of Frank and Agnes Haynes, and grew up in Charlottesville, VA. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Frank Haynes, Jr. sister Virginia Latchum, and their spouses, and former husband William R. Semmes of Savannah, Georgia. She moved to Savannah in 1950 and raised her family there. She was active in both Blessed Sacrament and Sacred Heart parishes, where her sons attended school. Following the death of her husband, she became a nun and moved to Springfield, MO, working for many years at a homeless shelter operated by the Diocese of St. Louis. Following her retirement, she moved to Cookeville to be closer to her son Paul and his family, and was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas parish. She enjoyed reading, visiting with family, and was possessed of a quick mind and a strong sense of humor. She is survived by her five sons: Raphael (Anne) and Frank, of Savannah; Paul (Peggy) of Cookeville; David (Luella) of Centerport, NY; and Stephen, of Houston, TX. She is also survived by grandsons Ben Semmes of Greer, SC, and Andrew Semmes, of Cookeville, and their sister Rebecca (Mustafa) Hasnain of Washington DC; and Hartley and Kelvin Semmes of Centerport; and great-granddaughter Ambreen Hasnain; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral mass will be held at noon on Saturday, August 20, 2016, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Cookeville. Interment will be in the family plot in Savannah, GA, at a later date.
