Funeral services for Douglas "Doug" Allen Burgess, 71 of Baxter, will be Friday, August 27, 11 AM at the Baxter Chapel of Hooper Huddleston Horner Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Smellage Memory Gardens in the Boma Community. The family will receive friends Thursday from 4 to 8PM and Friday after 9 AM until service time. Bro. Fabron Nicholson, Bro. Archie Whitefield and Bro. Charlie Wills will officiate. Mr. Burgess died Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at his home. He was born September 25, 1949 in Putnam County to the late Arvil Vance and Gennie Frances Oaks Burgess. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Roger Dale, Jimmy and Richard Burgess. Doug began his career in law enforcement with Baxter City Police Department from 1979-1981 and retired from the Putnam County Sheriff's Department as Chief Detective in 2012 with 31 years of service. He enjoyed being with family and friends, especially the grandkids. He enjoyed watching TV westerns including Gunsmoke, and watching The Voice. He was a member of NRA. Survivors include wife of 42 years (Married February 12, 1979) Joan Butler Burgess of Baxter, daughter and son-in-law Jennifer and Brian Cobb of Cookeville, sons and daughters-in-law Chris and Ginger Tucker of Knoxville, Danny and Tammy Tucker of Baxter, sisters and a brother-in-law Ruby Jo Maynard of Silver Point, Eulah and John Gentry of Cookeville, Eris Bryant of Boma, brothers and a sister-in-law Donny and Paula Burgess, Tony Burgess all of Boma, grandchildren: Candace Spurlock, Corey (Mary) Ragland, Cade (Taylin) Tucker, Cassidy Tucker, William Tucker, Samuel Tucker, June O'Donnell, Autumn O'Donnell, Charles, Lucas and B.J. Cobb, great-grandchildren: Easton Spurlock, Cooper Tucker, Oakley Tucker and soon to be Ellison Ragland. Active Pallbearers will be Brent Mathis, Matt Haugk, Richard Burgess, Shaune Bryant, Vance and Thomas Gentry, Corey Ragland, Cade Tucker, Spencer Johnson, Brad Butler, Jason Gibson, Josh Brown, Will and Sam Tucker.
