Edna Stewart

d. July 5, 2012

Funeral services for Doyle Edna Stewart, 95, of Cookeville, will be held at 11 am Saturday, July 7, at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home with Bro. Paul Fox officiating. Interment will follow in the Cookeville City Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 9 am until service time at the funeral home. Mrs. Stewart died Thursday, July 5, 2012, at the Cookeville Regional Medical Center. She was born September 10, 1916 in Putnam County to the late John Wayne and Lura Dawes Allen. Edna was a spunky, friendly, generous and benevolent Christian lady. Many of her benevolent deeds were done privately with the knowledge of very few. She thoroughly enjoyed her children and grandchildren and visiting with her friends. She enjoyed taking day trips with her daughters. She was the neighborhood socialite anywhere she lived. She was known for her love of and talent of growing beautiful flowers. She had enjoyed unusually good health until the last few years when dementia had altered both her physical and mental capacities. She was a member of the Bloomington Springs Church of Christ for many years and a member of the Willow Avenue Church of Christ for the last several years. Unfortunately, the dementia has caused her to be shut in and unable to attend services for the last years of her life. She will be remembered by many as one of the first meter maids and "school mother" crossing guards in Cookeville. She retired from the Cookeville Police Department with 20 years of service. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Henry O. (Red) Stewart (whom died April 12, 1989); granddaughter, Michelle Lee Stewart; step-son, Arvel Eugene Stewart; three brothers, James Allen, Winnell Allen, and Charlie Allen; sister Ella Allen Allison; nephew, Glyn (Speedy) Allison; and great-niece Ruth Ada Maddux Jones. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Barbara Stewart; two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Gary Jett, and Judy and Butch Randolph, all of Cookeville; eight grandchildren, Lisa Stanze of Collierville, TN; Amy Weaver of Cookeville, Allison Motley of Murfreesboro, TN, Dustin Randolph of Cookeville, Abi Jett of Pittsburg, PA, Kathy Stewart of Florida, Sheri Higgins of Alabama, and Justin Stewart of Kentucky; two step grandchildren, Lisa Hieatt and Stephen Hargis both of Cookeville; brother, Bill Allen of Illinois; two sisters- in-law, Maudine Harville and Gladys Phillips, both of Baxter; and several nieces and nephews, including Howard Allison and Ruth Allison Knowles of Cookeville. The family acknowledges and deeply appreciates the dedicated care given to their mother by Dr. James Staggs. They also wish to thank the 5th floor nurses of CRMC, Bethesda Health Care Center and Home Instead Senior Care. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Upper Cumberland Christian Home, 790 State Street, Cookeville, TN 38501.
