Funeral services for Franklin Douglas Massa, age 78 of Cookeville will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday September 30 at Stevens Street Baptist Church. Pastors Scott Parkison, Frank Webb, and Ed Malone will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow at Crest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5 - 7 p.m and again Wednesday from 10 a.m. until service time at the church. Due to COVID-19 precautions, social distancing measures will be in place and the use of masks are appreciated. Frank passed away Sunday morning September 27, 2020 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. He was born December 12, 1941 in Putnam County to the late Lawrence Grace Massa Sr. and Elise Goodwin Massa. Frank began a lengthy career with the US Government with the Dept of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service in 1964. After completing his Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Science at Tennessee Tech in 1966, he began a career with US Army Corps of Engineers. His career with Corp spanned 35 years with service at Center Hill Lake, Dale Hollow Lake, and the Nashville District Office. He also served in the TN Army National Guard as a helicopter pilot, and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 32 years of service. Frank was a longtime member of the Cookeville Civitan Club. Frank was kind, generous, and wise. He loved the Lord with all of his heart and was quick to acknowledge God as the source for his blessings. He often said he lived such a blessed life. He served as a faithful member and deacon at Stevens Street Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Massa; and an infant brother, Lawrence Grace Massa Jr. He is survived by his wife of 58 wonderful years, Sharon AnnYoung Massa; daughter Melinda Ann Poteet; son, Douglas Edward Massa all of Cookeville; six grandchildren, Stephen A. Poteet, Samuel Cody (Beth) Poteet, Mason Douglas (Carla Melgar) Poteet, Leanna Grace Poteet, Robert J. Massa, and Ashley Shea Massa; and nine great-grandchildren, Jaidon Ray Poteet, Connor Dearinger, Anthony Farley, Lily Dearinger, Gabi Farley, Derek Farley, Sophia Poteet; Logan Poteet and Elijah Jameson Masters; sister, Deborah (Rick) Cooper of Blacksburg, VA; sister-in-law, Melissa Massa; nephew, Jack Ronald Jr., two nieces, Amanda Cooper and Emma Mason; and one great nephew, Tucker Jack Massa. His extended family includes numerous cousins, friends, church family, golfing buddies (Baptist Boys), military family, work family, as well as those who considered him a father figure. Stephen and Samuel Poteet, Robert J. Massa, Jay Massa, Jimmy Arms, and Mark Steele will serve as pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers Mason D. Poteet, Gary, Greg, Matthew, and Steve Goodwin, and members of the TN Army National Guard and US Army Corp of Engineers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Stevens Street Baptist Church Building Fund, 327 W. Stevens St., Cookeville, TN 38501.
