A memorial service for John William Cox, Jr., 62, of Baxter, will be held at 6 pm Monday, September 16, at the First Baptist Church Cookeville Family Life Center with Dr. Randall Adkisson officiating. John's family will receive friends Monday from 4 – 6 pm at the Family Life Center. John went home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 9, 2013 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. He was born on March 9, 1951 in Scranton, PA, to the late John William Cox, Sr. and Anne Marie Cox. He accepted Christ as his Savior and Lord on August 6, 2013. John was a 1969 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Levittown, PA and attended Bloomsburg University where he was the captain of the football team. He worked at Dana Corporation in Gordonsville for 23 � years. John had a great love for sports and was a coach and mentor to many throughout his life. He served as an assistant football coach at Harry S. Truman High School in Pennsylvania and coached pee wee football in Gordonsville, TN. John also coached American Legion, Babe Ruth and Little League baseball and coached both his daughters in softball. He was the honorary grandfather and driver for many members of the Upperman High School baseball team. John was heavily involved in the Upward Basketball and Cheerleading ministry at First Baptist Church, serving as a coach and helping with the concession stand. He was an avid Yankees fan and was part of the Yankees breakfast club. John was preceded in death by his parents and his father and mother-in-law, Joseph Edward Stout, Sr. and Ann G. Stout. He is survived by his wife of almost 36 years, Doreen Cox; daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Richard LaFever of Baxter; daughter, Colleen Cox of Cookeville; grandson, Ryan LaFever of Baxter; sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and John Havrilla of Millsboro, DE; a brother and sister-in-law, Kevin and Patti Cox of Doylestown, PA; sister-in-law and brother-in law, Edie and Butch Lasser of Smithville; sister-in-law, Harriet Mulford of Smithville; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Joseph and Tiffany Stout of Hickman and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. In honor of John's love of sports, the family requests that those who were involved with either the Upward Basketball and Cheerleading ministry or any of the many baseball teams he was a part of wear team attire. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made for John's grandson Ryan LaFever to be used for sports/educational purposes.
