Martha Barton

Memorial Services for Mrs. Martha Jane Barton, 83 of Cookeville will be held Friday at 2 PM at Christ Community Church with Bro. Ed Malone officiating. Mrs. Barton died Thursday evening November 10, 2011 in the NHC of Cookeville. Mrs. Barton was born July 12, 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Walter Raymond and Lida Marie Brainard Bruce. She was a member of Christ Community Church. She worked as a radiation therapist and x-ray technician; and was retired from the George Mitchell Manufacturing Company after serving from 1973 to 1990. She was active in civic and community affairs wherever she lived. She served as President of the American Cancer Society in Cleveland, OH and was the first female board member of the former Cookeville Country Club. Mrs. Barton was an avid golfer and bird watcher. Survivors include her two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael B. & Sally L. Hayes, and Jeff Hayes & Stacy Jackson all of Cookeville; 10-grandchildren, Rebecca (Kurt) Hofman, Sarah Hayes, Joshua Hayes, Joseph Hayes, Brandy Thorne, Crystal Thorne, Gabriel Thorne, Enoch Thorne, Lyda Thorne and Isabella McCarey; five great grandchildren, Alexander, Emma, Emily, Savannah, & Keegan. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Edward M. Hayes, daughter, Debra Lee Thorne, and daughter-in-law, Zerina Clouse Hayes.
