Graveside services for Mrs. Mary England, age 92 of Lebanon and formerly of Joelton and Cookeville, will be held Friday, June 2nd at 11:00 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Joelton, TN. Father James Panackal will officiate. Mrs. England's family will receive friends Friday immediately following the service at the cemetery. She died Monday evening, May 29, 2017 at Elmcroft Assisted Living in Lebanon, TN. She was born May 12, 1925 in the Calfkiller community of Putnam County to the late Luther and Effie Mae Johnson Gooch. She was a 1947 graduate of Tennessee Polytechnic Institute (now Tennessee Tech University). Mary worked for the U.S. Postal Service and served as Postmaster in Whites Creek, TN. She attended First Presbyterian Church while living in Cookeville and was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church while in Joelton. Mary had an especially sweet nature and lived an active life. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and entertaining for family, knitting, fishing, collecting arrowheads and keeping up with politics. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jere England (who died April 6, 1997); sister, Betty Poteet; and brothers, Joseph Gooch and Ronald Earl Gooch. She is survived by her nephew, Phillip Poteet and wife Emy of Lebanon; nieces, Debbie Poteet and Penny Poteet-Carey; great nieces, Madelyn Poteet (her little buddy) and Molly Poteet; and by great nephews, Thomas Poteet and Burke Carey.
