Funeral Services for Rex C. Herron, 67 of the Dillards Creek Community of Smith County, will be Wednesday, July 6 at 11 AM from the Baxter Chapel of Hooper Huddleston Horner Funeral Home. Interment will be in Spears Cemetery. Mr. Herron passed away Friday, July 1, 2016 at his home. He was born December 26, 1948 in Putnam County to the late Clennie and Myrtis Jones Herron. He was a 1967 graduate of Upperman High School in Baxter. He graduated from Tennessee Tech University with a Bachelors Degree in Physics and a Masters Degree in Marine Fishery. He attended Utah State University and received his Doctorate Degree in Fresh Water Ecology. He served as a Professor at Sam Houston State University in Texas and retired in 2011 with thirty years of service with NOAA. He was a respected and published scientist. He was a life-long Little League Coach. He loved farming, fishing, hunting and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the Tucker Ridge Garage Band. He was a musician, loved playing the guitar, harmonica and singing vocals. He was very proud of his children and their accomplishments: daughter Stacey a Doctor, Nathaniel a small business owner and Josh in Law Enforcement. Survivors include daughter Stacey Browning of Chestnut Mound and her friend Eric Freiman, sons Nathaniel (Brandy) Herron of Slidell, Louisiana, Josh Herron of Jemez Springs, New Mexico, sisters Hilda Packingham of Cookeville, Neva Jo (Ron) Packingham of Nashville, Anne (Eric) Sorenson of Crocker, Missouri, brothers Richard Herron of Cookeville, Ronnie (Sandra) Herron of Baxter, grandchildren: Callahan and Brannagan Browning. Family will receive friends Tuesday from 5 to 8 and after 9 AM Wednesday at the funeral home. Bro. Ray Duke will officiate. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
