Richard E. Barns Jr. passed away on Sunday, December 27, 2020 at Cumberland Medical Center in Crossville, TN at the age of 65 due to complications from Covid-19. Private funeral services for Richard will be held on Saturday, January 2, 2021. Burial at Salem Cemetery. Pastor Chris Sparkman will officiate. He was born on November 25, 1955 in Lima, OH to the late Richard E. Barns Sr. and the late Helen Louise Sanders Barns. Richard attended Oak Hill Church. He retired from Tennessee Tech University in 2017 with 40 years of service. He was the Associate Director of Residential Life. Richard received three degrees from Tennessee Tech University: Bachelor of Science in Education in Health Education in 1978; Master of Arts in Educational Psychology and Counseling Education in 1984; and a Specialist in Education in Educational Psychology and Counseling Education in 1995. Richard is survived by his college sweetheart, Jayne Newman Barns, whom he married on June 18, 1977 in Cookeville, TN; sons, Christopher (Kim) Barns of Murfreesboro and Jason (Sarah) Barns of Nashville; four grandchildren, David Barns, Jacob Barns, Katherine Barns and Elijah Barns of Murfreesboro; three grandcats, Waldo, Frankie and Birdie of Nashville; one nephew, Jonathan McNabb of Nashville; one niece, Rachel McNabb Darter of Brentwood; one great niece, Eleanor Darter of Brentwood; four aunts, Karen Warner of Powell, OH, Janet Taylor of Arrgola, IN, Doris Motts of Lancaster, OH, and Dorothy Neu of Mackinaw, IL; and several cousins. Richard will be missed by those who knew him. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Teresa Marie Barns McNabb. Honorary pallbearers are Kevin Edwards, Marty Cook, Jerry Wilkinson, Steve Huntley, Wynn Cowan, Steve Bilbrey, Howard Wells, Donald Dillon, Freeman Gaw and Alvin Walker.
