Funeral services for Mr. Shirley Stamps, age 94, of Cookeville, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 3 in the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Gaw officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the Shady Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5 - 7 p.m. and again Wednesday from 9 a.m. until service time. Mr. Stamps passed away Monday morning August 1, 2016, in Algood, TN at Signature Healthcare of Putnam County. He was born April 1, 1922, in a log cabin on his family's farm in the Brotherton Community of Putnam County, TN to the late Virgil and Belle Rockwell Stamps. Mr. Stamps graduated from Monterey High School in 1941. He served in the US Army and achieved the rank of Corporal. Assigned to the Asiatic Pacific Theater during World War II, he received two bronze stars and participated in the Philippine Liberation Campaign(Leyte Invasion with Bronze Arrowhead), Bismark-Archipeiago Campaign, New Guinea Campaign, and the Battle of Luzon. Mr. Stamps was a longtime member of Washington Avenue Baptist Church. He was a member of Monterey Masonic Lodge #751 F&AM and was a retired machinist with McCord-Winn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two infant sisters, and his wife of 69 years, Delzie Lee Ray Stamps. They married March 13, 1942, in Ringgold, GA. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Patti Stamps of Crossville; two grandchildren, Eric (Jey) Stamps of Lenoir City, TN and Jenni Stamps of Knoxville; great-grandchild, Libby Stamps; niece, Brenda Barr of Manchester; nephew, Gary Howard of Algood; and sister-in-law, Ann Howard of Algood. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Memorial contributions may be made to Washington Avenue Baptist Church, 1621 N. Washington Ave., Cookeville, TN 38501.
