Wayne L. Thompson, a beacon of knowledge and faith, passed away on May 31, 2024, at the age of 78. Born in Washington, DC, Wayne grew up to be a man of great intellect and spirit, whose life journey brought warmth and enlightenment to all who knew him. His final years were spent in Cookeville, TN, surrounded by the love and prayers of his family and friends.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Malcolm H. and Margaret Reed Thompson, his sister, Claire Pitts, and brother, Gary Thompson. He leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication through his beloved wife, Wendy Thompson, their three children, Carrie Hardin and her husband Jason, Jeffrey Thompson and his wife Laura, and Christopher Thompson and his wife Courtney, and their cherished grandchildren, Brett, Caden, Hannah, AJ, Elena, Oscar, Micah, and Thea. Wayne is also survived by his brother, Bruce Thomson and wife Donna, and sister, Debra Thompson and husband Joseph, all of whom will forever hold him in their hearts.
Wayne earned his bachelor's degree from the University of New Hampshire, followed by a master's degree in physics from the University of Wisconsin. His passion for science and education led him to a distinguished career as a professor at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX, and later at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. His dedication to teaching and research touched the lives of countless students and colleagues.
Beyond his academic pursuits, Wayne lived a life full of service and worship as a longtime, active member of Parkway Baptist Church in Knoxville, TN. He was a family man to the core and a devoted follower of Jesus Christ. His faith was the cornerstone of his existence, guiding him in every action and decision.
A memorial service will be held Saturday June 22, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. the Cookeville chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Lindy Apon, Pastor at Parkway Baptist, will officiate.
Wayne's family will receive friends Saturday, June 22nd from 2:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.
