Almon Smith

February 12, 1929 — February 24, 2024

A celebration of life service for Mr. Almon Oneal Smith, age 95 will be held Thursday, February 29, 2024 at 1:00 pm in the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Rev Eric Vickers will officiate. Interment will follow in West Cemetery (West Cemetery Road, Cookeville).


His family will receive friends Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.


Mr. Smith died Saturday February 24, 2024 at Signature Healthcare of Putnam County.


He was born February 12, 1929 in Greenhill, AL to the late Homer Smith and Bertha Quillen Smith. At age 17, he moved to Toledo, Ohio where he lived near relatives and made many friends. Almon met his wife of 66 years, in Toledo (or Toodledgo as he called it). Almon had a great since of humor that endeared him to his many friends. All who became acquainted with him loved him. He was an active member of Shelton Park Church of God. Almon loved to play his mandolin, which he made along with many stringed instruments. Almon also learned to play harmonica in his later years.


He and his late wife Louise Harp Smith enjoyed entertaining in their home, often times surrounded by music.


They moved to Cookeville, TN after retiring from Teledyne Industries in 1992. He loved the Lord and was an active member of Praise Cathedral Church of God alongside his wife. He played mandolin at the church, for events, and with a group called Mrs. Dow & the Boys. They played in nursing home and assisted living facilities.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Sharp Smith; son, Larry Smith; and by four brothers, Alvin Wright, Dalton Wright, Homer (Duke) Smith, Jr. and James Smith.


He is survived by a daughter, Dianna Ledbetter and husband Dale, of Cookeville; a sister, Betty Townsend and husband David; grandchildren, Ryan, Bobby and Angela Weiker; Joshus (Jenny) Smith and Tracie (Bruc) Stock; many great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews that he was fond of.


Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.


Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers are suggested to be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 950 N Old Kentucky Rd, Cookeville, TN 38501.
