BAXTER CHAPEL-Arthur "Art" Clemons, 83 of Knoxville, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at Diversicare of Oak Ridge in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Born on October 20, 1942, in Silver Point, Tennessee, Art lived a life filled with dedication, passion, and love for his family and profession.
Art's impressive academic journey began at Upperman High School, from which he graduated in 1961. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from Tennessee Tech University, followed by a Master’s degree from the University of Cincinnati. His thirst for knowledge culminated in a PhD in Physics from Xavier University. This educational background laid the foundation for a successful career, where he made significant contributions while working at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and within the Aerospace Division of General Electric.
Beyond his professional achievements, Art was a devoted husband to his beloved wife of 58 years, Virginia Dianne Moore Clemons, of Knoxville, Tennessee. Together, they shared a life filled with joy and companionship. Art also leaves behind his sister, Katie Lee Lafever of Cookeville, Tennessee.
Art was passionate about his community and took pride in being a member of the West End Church of Christ in Knoxville. His interests included being a dedicated fan of the University of Tennessee Volunteers, especially its football team. He cherished the moments spent with his beloved dog, Jake, with whom he formed an inseparable bond.
Art was preceded in death by his parents, Byrd Clemons Sr. and Ethel Holland Clemons; his brothers, Arvil Clemons, Lionel Clemons, James Fayron Clemons, Roosevelt Clemons, and Byrd Clemons Jr.; and his sister, Janie B. Clemons Foster.
A graveside service and interment will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at Mt. Holley Cemetery, 1850 Allen Ferry Rd. in DeKalb County, Tennessee, at 1:00 PM (CST), with Bro. Jeremy Weekley officiating.
Art will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege to know him. His legacy of kindness, intellect, and love for his family will continue to live on in the hearts of those he touched.
