DYER CHAPEL-Ava Sue Pifer, a beloved member of the Cookeville community, peacefully passed away at her home on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at the age of 81. Born on May 27, 1944, in Cookeville, Tennessee, she exemplified warmth, creativity, and an unwavering dedication to God and her family and passions throughout her life.
Sue’s career spanned her time as a dedicated employee at Hartman Luggage, where her craftsmanship shone through as a talented seamstress. Her love for sewing extended into her personal life, where she found joy in quilting, a hobby that allowed her to express her artistic spirit. Furthermore, her voice brought joy to many, as she cherished singing in the choir at Wilhite Baptist Church, a place that held a special significance in her heart.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Harold Pifer, of Cookeville; her two sons, Gardner (Cheryl) McClain of Lebanon and Daniel (Sharon) McClain of Dayton, OH; her two stepdaughters, Diana Atkins of Brentwood, CA, and Linda (Paul) Schork of Louisville, KY; three sisters, Shirley (Ed) Dyer of Baxter, Treva Sorrell of Cookeville and Donna Walker of Indiana. Sue was a proud grandmother to Justin (Angela) McClain and Jesse (Krista) McClain, as well as a great grandmother to Abigaile, Alison, Michael, Alexis, Trey, Katy, and Kimber. Her legacy will undoubtedly live on through the many lives she has touched.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Napoleon Payton Helms, Jr. and Beulah Sliger Helms; her son, Michael Shawn McClain; daughter-in-law, Nancy McClain; and her siblings, Olen Helms, William Harold "Cotton" Helms, Loyd Kenneth Helms, Lennell Helms, Hulon Helms, Ronnie Mack Helms, Jerry Helms, and Floyd Helms.
Visitation for Ava Sue Pifer will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Dyer Chapel, located at 798 South Willow Avenue, Cookeville, TN, followed by a funeral service starting at 1:00 PM. Interment will be in West Cemetery. Bro. Tim Miles, Bro. Chuck Overton and grandson Jesse McClain will officiate.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Sue’s spirit, filled with kindness and creativity, will be dearly missed but cherished in the memories of her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know her.
