Benson Kern

COOKEVILLE CHAPEL - Pastor Ben Kern, a devoted servant of faith and a treasured member of his community, peacefully passed away on January 18, 2026, at his residence in Cookeville, Tennessee, with his loving wife, Judy by his side. Born on December 18, 1944, in New Jersey, Benson demonstrated the virtues of perseverance, dedication, and compassion throughout his life.

Pastor Ben's educational journey began at the Ohio State University, where he graduated in 1967. He then pursued further theological training, obtaining a Master of Divinity degree from Ashland Theological Seminary in 1980. His commitment to education was matched by his dedication to service, which began during his time at Ohio State when he joined the Army Reserves. Benson served in the United States Army, spending active duty at Fort Knox, Kentucky, before being discharged as a staff sergeant after six years of enlistment.

Following his military service, Benson embarked on a career with Sears, where he was part of their management training program. It was during his tenure at Sears that he met his beloved wife, Judy Millar Kern, who remains his devoted partner in Cookeville.

In 1976, a pivotal moment occurred in Benson’s life when he surrendered to the Lord, leading him to resign from his position at Sears to focus on full-time ministry. His journey in service to the church began at North Baptist Church in Columbus, Ohio (his home church), where he joined the staff while attending seminary. In 1981, he accepted the call to serve as the pastor at First Baptist Church in Buhl, Idaho, where he devoted fourteen years to leading and uplifting his congregation. In 1995, Benson and Judy moved to Livonia, Michigan, to pastor Alpha Baptist Church for seventeen years, deeply impacting the lives of many before his retirement. Even after retiring, Benson remained passionately involved in the community, teaching Sunday School at Cookeville First Baptist Church until his passing.

Outside of his ministerial obligations, Benson cherished his personal interests, including visiting and studying the history of Israel, avid reading, and following The Ohio State Football team. His enthusiasm for knowledge and love for the game reflected his dynamic personality and zest for life.

Benson is survived by his loving wife, Judy Millar Kern, whose unwavering support and partnership enriched their lifelong journey together. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Jeanette Alloway Kern.

Funeral Services with Military Honors for Pastor Ben will be held at 2 PM Thursday, January 22, 2026 at Cookeville First Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday from 12 PM until the time of the service.
