COOKEVILLE CHAPEL - Bettie Jean McBroom Braswell, faithful wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully on Thursday May 28, 2026, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Born on February 25, 1946, in Jackson County, Tennessee, Bettie lived a life marked by dedication, loyalty, and steadfast faith.
Bettie devoted many years working as a Deputy Clerk with the Putnam County Circuit Court Clerk’s office, where her commitment and diligence earned her respect and admiration. Bettie was known for her loyalty as a friend, a quality that endeared her to all who had the privilege of knowing her. She possessed a determined spirit, occasionally described as stubborn, which guided her through life with resolve and strength.
A faithful and proud member of Stevens Street Baptist Church, Bettie's Christian faith was a central pillar of her identity. Her love for the church and her church family was evident throughout her life. She also treasured precious moments traveling and creating memories on trips to the Smokey Mountains and the beach - experiences that brought joy and togetherness. In quieter times, Bettie was an avid reader, finding comfort and escape through the pages of countless books.
Bettie is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Paul Braswell, with whom she shared a deep partnership since their marriage on April 14, 1972. She is also remembered fondly by her daughter Kelly Fields and son-in-law Josh, her cherished grandchildren Alivia and Dylan Fields, her sister Nell Smelcer and her husband Jim, as well as her niece Holly Borntrager and her husband Curtis. Bettie was preceded in death by her parents, Carlen McBroom and Dora Anderson McBroom, whose legacy she carried forward with honor.
A funeral service to honor Bettie will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday June 3 at Stevens Street Baptist Church. Jimmy Arms and Lee Bailey will officiate. Visitation for friends and family will be Tuesday from 5 - 8 p.m., and again Wednesday from 9 - 11 a.m. Bettie will be laid to rest at Crest Lawn Cemetery.
The family kindly requests that memorial contributions be directed to the Care Center at Stevens Street Baptist Church, 327 W. Stevens St., Cookeville, TN 38501.
Bettie Braswell’s life was an inspiring testament to faith, family, and friendship. Her warmth, steadfastness, and faith will remain in the hearts of those who love her.
