Evelyn Hyder

COOKEVILLE CHAPEL - Bonnie Evelyn Hyder, a woman whose life was marked by strength, feistiness, and unwavering determination, passed away peacefully on Sunday May 3, 2026, at her residence in Cookeville. Born on July 8, 1941, in Smith County, Tennessee, Evelyn left and indelible mark on her family and friends.

Evelyn’s journey through life was one of love and dedication. She was a devoted homemaker in her early years, nurturing her family with fierce affection and attention. Later, she entered the workforce, managing the Readmore Bookstore with a steady hand before dedicating her later career to helping others in the Tennessee Tech University's pharmacy, where she ultimately retired. Her work reflected her steadfast character and her desire to contribute meaningfully to her community.

A woman who loved her family with an intensity that defined her very being, Evelyn’s strength was matched only by her tenderness toward those closest to her. She found joy in simple pleasures, especially in her hobbies of bowling and golfing, pastimes that brought her both competition and camaraderie. Bonnie was a longtime member of the Cookeville First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, a testament to her faith and commitment to her spiritual community.

Her legacy lives on in her son, Jim Hyder, who carries forward her spirit; her beloved sister, Margaret Ward Merrill and her husband, Glen; her cherished grandchildren, Aaron and Cody Hyder; her daughter-in-law, Emily Hyder; and nephews, Colby and Tate Pagan. These family members reflect the love and loyalty Bonnie fostered in her lifetime.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, James Loyd Hyder Sr.; her daughter, Terri Suzanne Hyder; and her infant daughter, Bonnie Hyder, whom she held close in heart.

A funeral service to honor Evelyn will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday May 7 at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. Rev. Christian Smith will officiate. Visitation for friends and family will be Thursday from 10 a.m - 1 p.m. Following the service, Evelyn will be interred at Cookeville City Cemetery.
