Cleao Elizabeth Dubey, wife of Robert Edward Dubey Age 97, 1921-2018 passed away on April 10, 2018. She is survived by her daughter, Joyce Irene Dubey, age 73, of Cookeville; son, Eugene F. Dubey, age 75, of Baraboo, WI; brother, James Holyfield, age 90, of Denver, CO. Cleao was born in Wise, VA. February 19, 1921. Cleao was a loving homemaker and mother. She had great artistic talent and loved to create oil paintings of Mountainist Appalachian scenes. She was very autholetic, and as a teen could do a back bend and pick up a handkerchief with her teeth. Cleao loved growing flowers including prize WINNING Irises. She was also on the Tech Gardening Club. Cleao was a true Appalachian country girl. Her home place in Wise, VA was a nice frame house, with an indoor well, Kerosene lamp lighting, wood/coal stove and fireplace. Her father and other men in the community ran phone lines three miles to Wise on poles and on trees. They bought phones for their homes and maintained the system until Bell of VA bought it from them. She met her husband Robert Dubey in Detroit, MI during WW2 while working at a company that made auto radiators. They met after he was discharged from the armed forces in 1945. They started their life together in Detroit where Robert worked for the Veterans Administration teaching veterans and helping them find jobs. They moved to Gainesville, FL in the early 1950's where Robert earned a Doctorial Degree from the University Of Florida. After that, the family lived in Georgia, Missouri, West Virginia, Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, and settled in Cookeville in 1964. Robert taught at Tennessee Tech until he retired. Robert passed away in 2005 Cleao and her daughter Joyce lived at 340 South Maple until Cleao's passing on April 10, 2018.
