Bro. David Vaughn

Gary David Vaughn, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated servant of the Lord, passed away on January 9, 2026, at NHC Healthcare in Cookeville, Tennessee, at the age of 87. Born on July 22, 1938, in the Allred community of Overton County, Tennessee. His life was characterized by his unwavering faith, profound love for his family, and his commitment to preaching the word of God.

David enjoyed a fruitful career, spending 20 years working for the Ralston Purina Company in Battle Creek, Michigan. However, his true calling led him to serve as a minister in Portageville, Missouri, Burlington, North Carolina, and Gastonia, North Carolina. After retiring in 2004, David moved to Cookeville, where he continued his ministry, preaching in several rural congregations in the Upper Cumberland area. His dedication and passion for teaching brought hope and inspiration to many. He was a member of Collegeside Church of Christ.

David was known for his friendly, compassionate disposition and was a gifted people person. His educational background included graduation from Livingston Academy, earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Bible from the Alabama Christian School of Religion, and graduation from Preston Road School of Preaching in Dallas, Texas. Throughout his lifetime, he enriched the lives of countless individuals through his heartfelt sermons and compassionate spirit.

Family was at the heart of David’s existence. He leaves behind his beloved wife of over 66 years, Caroline Luscombe Vaughn, who was his steadfast partner in life and ministry. Their legacy continues through their three children: sons Mike and wife Amy Vaughn, and Mark and wife Mandy Vaughn, and daughter Lori Daugherty. David cherished his role as grandfather to Jenny Vaughn and Olivia Vaughn. He is also survived by a beloved sister, Hildagarde Vaughn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Benton and Orangie Allred Vaughn, as well as his brothers Burns, Hilliard, Roland, Robert, Doyle, Bruce, and Joel Vaughn, and sisters Minnie Robertson and Bobbie Bush.

David had a passion beyond preaching; he enjoyed woodcarving, restoring and refinishing furniture, and painting. His creativity and artistry were a testament to his spirit and brought beauty into the lives of those around him.
