COOKEVILLE CHAPEL - Dr. Debbie Barnard, age 57, of Cookeville, Tennessee, passed away on Monday, October 12, 2026, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. She was born on April 28, 1969, in Jeannette, Pennsylvania, then moved to and grew up in Concord, North Carolina.

Debbie graduated with her Bachelor’s degree from Western Carolina University in 1991, and earned her Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in French language and literature from Vanderbilt University in 1995 and 2003, respectively.

Dr. Barnard began working at Tennessee Tech University as a French professor in the Department of Foreign Languages in 2006. She inspired her students to be life-long learners of French language and culture and also to think critically about a wide variety of subjects. She was a Fulbright Scholar in France and Tunisia. Later, as a professor at Tennessee Tech, she became the Fulbright Scholar Student Program Advisor in 2007. Thanks to her careful guidance, an impressive seven students received Fulbright awards.

Dr. Barnard was an outstanding scholar, focusing on francophone literature and culture, with a primary focus on North Africa. She presented at numerous national and international conferences and published an impressive number of articles around these topics.

Debbie’s impact was not only academic, her substantial influence was felt throughout the community. She served on the board of the Tennessee World Affairs Council; was a board member and sustaining donor of WCTE; and a member of the local chapter of the NAACP.

Debbie was a cherished and beloved friend to many. She was an avid gardener, generous host, great cook (especially crepe and chocolate mousse), and compassionate listener and confidante. She loved to travel, attend concerts, go on challenging hikes (including segments of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail), and often brought her friends along.

Debbie is survived by her father, George Barnard, of Cookeville, her family in Canada and around the world, her many friends, students, and very importantly, her dog, Lucky.

Debbie was many things to many people. She will be sorely missed.
