Funeral services for Donny Clinton Henderson Kimes, age 75 of Cookeville, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday October 23 at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home Bro. Mike Adams and Bro. Harold Walker will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
His family will receive friends Saturday from 5 - 8 p.m. and again Sunday from 12 p.m.until service time.
Donny passed away Wednesday October 19, 2022 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
He was born October 2, 1947 in Cookeville to the late Henry Henderson Kimes and Emogene Bilbrey Kimes.
Donny was a US Army veteran. He had a life long love of sports, and began coaching basketball while in the Army. He continued coaching and mentoring throughout his life, recently coaching his grandson in his travel baseball team, the Lugnuts.
Upon graduating high school at Algood, he was offered two scholarships (agriculture and basketball) from Tennessee Tech University. He chose the agriculture scholarship and earned and a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in agriculture. Donny was a food inspector for USDA after graduating college and prior being drafted into the Army. Donny went on to have a career in the TN Soil Conservation. After retirement he started a second career in education at Monterey High School and assistant football coach for the wildcats. He later went on to retire a second time from MetLife.
Donny was a member and deacon at Mt. Pleasant Freewill Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Wanda Ledbetter Kimes; daughter, Sherry (Ryan) Allen; son, Corey Kimes all of Cookeville; brothers Gary (Earline) Kimes of Cookeville, Randall (Sharon) Kimes of Celina; sister, Dianne (Gary) Ledbetter of Rickman; grandchildren, Tucker, Jozalyn, and Lucy Allen; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Kathy (Al) Crisp, and brother, Jacky Kimes.
