Ed Dyer

Edward Morgan Dyer, age 78 of Baxter, died peacefully at his home on Sunday, November 1, 2026 following an extended illness. He was born on December 22, 1947 in Putnam County, Tennessee to the late Charlie Edward and Mattie (Allen) Dyer.

Known as Pappy to his family, and for his mischievous looks and schemes with his grandchildren, Ed lived a simple yet impactful life. He was most often seen in blue jean overalls or camouflage. Through the years he enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, NASCAR races, smoking meat, and playing cards. He proudly displayed two winning royal flush hands among the keepsakes in his living room and would often tell stories about card games he had played.

Ed worked 30 years as an engineer with Cummins Filtration/Fleetguard of Cookeville. He also owned and operated The Hunter’s Corner (a Baxter gun shop), and continued working for several years after retirement as the owner/operator of Pappy’s Lawn Service. He proudly served as a founding member for the Fleetguard Federal Credit Union Board of Directors for 26 years.

He married his loving wife, Shirley (Helms) Dyer on June 10, 1967 in Baxter, where they shared 59 years together. She was by his side at the time of his passing. He is also survived by daughters Kim (Debbie) Dyer of Double Springs and Becky (Brandon) Smith of Cookeville, grandchildren Jennifer Ferowich, Kristen Steel, and Caden Smith. Extended grandchildren and great-grandchildren Georgia, Joseph, Charley, and Micah McClendon of Florida, and Zachary and Martin McAlpin of West Virginia.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph A. Dyer; and two sisters, Betty Ruth Roberts and Linda Ann LAfever.

The family is especially grateful for the care and compassion given by Gentiva Hospice in his final days. They also wish to thank NHC of Cookeville and Cookeville Regional Medical Center for their exceptional care during his illness.

A celebration of Ed's life will be on Sunday, November 8th from 2-4pm at The Magnolia Room (located at 4770 Ben Jared Rd, Cookeville). To honor his signature style, family and friends are warmly invited to dress in overalls, blue jeans, or camouflage.

A private interment at Oddfellows Cemetery will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests you donate to the charity of your choice in his memory.
