Funeral services for Mrs. Evelyn Royce Howard will be held at l:00 p.m. Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Dyer Funeral Home with Bro. Ken Haney officiating. Interment will follow at Cookeville City Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, April 6, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and again Saturday, April 7th from 11:00 a.m. until service time. Mrs. Howard passed away on March 30, 2018 at Asbury - Wilson Health Care Center, Gaithersburg, Maryland after a short illness. Prior to Asbury, she lived at Lorien Mt. Airy, MD and Air Force Enlisted Widows Village (Hawthorn House), Shalimar, FL assisted living facilities for the past 5 years before moving from Cookeville, TN. She was a native and resident of Putnam County for many years. Mrs. Howard was born on September 4, 1926 in Buffalo Valley TN to the late Walter Deweese and Amanda Katherine Christian Deweese. She was married to Carlis (Riley) Lee Howard who was born and reared in Rickman, TN. When they married, her husband was serving in the U.S. Army during WWII in the European Theater. After the war ended, Mr. Howard separated from the Army for a short while and re-enlisted in the newly formed U.S. Air Force in 1948. Mrs. Howard was very proud to be a military wife, and accompanied her husband along with children to bases throughout the USA and overseas including Davis Monthan AFB, Tucson, Arizona, Hunter AFB, Savannah, Georgia, Campbell AFB, Hopkinsville, Kentucky, Lockbourne AFB, Columbus, Ohio, Royal Air Force, Greenham Common, Newbury, England, Myrtle Beach AFB, South Carolina, and an U.S. Air Force communications unit, the 12th Radio Relay Squadron in Pforzheim, Germany. After Mrs. Howard’s husband separated from the Air Force in 1959, the family moved to Cookeville, Tennessee, where Mrs. Howard was a resident for 54 years before moving to Shalimar, Florida. She worked for many years as a cook in “southern style” restaurants including Velma’s Restaurant, The S&W Cafeteria and Rice’s Motor Inn. She is survived by her daughters, Colonel Patricia (Patty) G. Horan (USAF, Retired) of Rockville, MD. and Linda (Tweety) C. Jahandari and son-in-law, Foroud Jahandari of North Potomac, MD and her grandson, Bijan (Alex) Jahandari and his companion April McPhaul of Clarksburg, MD. Mrs. Howard was preceded in death by her husband, Carlis Lee Howard and sons, Maxie Dale Howard and Aaron Lee Howard. Dyer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements (931)526-7158.
