BAXTER CHAPEL-Frank Evans Bain, 91, of Baxter, TN, died at NHC Dickson, after an extended illness. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the kind and compassionate caregivers and staff at NHC Dickson.
Frank was born in Baxter, TN, on January 7, 1934 to the late James Anderson Bain and Bonnie Lassie Nunally Bain. Frank attended Baxter Seminary, graduating in 1952, before graduating from Tennessee Tech. Frank worked as a computer programmer at Werthan Bag Co. in Nashville, TN, for 30+ years, retiring in 1999.
Frank was a member of the Baxter United Methodist Church and great-great grandson of its first pastor, Rev. George Washington Nunally.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents as well as siblings Pearl York, Nell Bain, Phyllis Hawkins, Ruth Wooten, James N. Bain, Bill Bain, and Elizabeth Feak, and is survived by many loving nieces and nephews, and his multi-decade sweetheart, Joanie Hill.
Frank was born and grew up in Baxter. He was a tackle on the football team at Baxter Seminary and Junior Class President in 1941. While a student at Tech, he hitchhiked from Baxter to Cookeville and back to attend. After moving to Nashville to work at Werthan, Frank came home every weekend to visit his mother and sister, and to tend his vegetable and flower garden. He supplied corn, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, turnip greens and more to family, neighbors, and friends in Nashville.
At Christmas the house would fill with family – Frank’s siblings, their children, and eventually their children’s children. Frank always shopped for the gift that appealed to or developed each child’s interests, like a chemistry set or rocket ship that actually flew.
Frank was part of a group of men who solved the world’s problems over coffee each morning at the Wagon Wheel diner on Broad Street, until it burned down in 2008.
Frank’s sense of humor, his quiet and kind demeanor, his generosity, and devotion to loved ones will be remembered and missed deeply by those whose lives he touched..
