Funeral services for Garland Stanton, age 95 passed away peacefully in his home on September 15,2022. He was born on July 13, 1927 in Akron OH. He grew up with his cousins on the family farm in the Gentry community, where he was known to all as "Sonny". He graduated from Baxter Seminary where he was captain of the football team. He served in the United States Navy during World War II aboard the USS Griffon. He later attended business classes at Tennessee Tech University and The University of Akron. On April 18, 1953, he married Lucy Neil Jared who was the love of his life. Their marriage lasted 69 years. In 1985 he retired as executive manager of the Mileage Sales Department for Firestone Tire and Rubber Company with 35 years of service.
He enjoyed watching sports, playing golf, growing tomatoes, horseback riding, hiking, and visiting the family farm. A true friend of scouting, he served as committee chair for Boy Scout Troop 327 in St. Louis MO and later was an assistant scoutmaster to Troop 402 in Wadsworth, OH. He was known for his wisdom, kindness, dry humor and devotion to family.
He is preceded in death by mother Disa Childers Stanton, father Garland Gobel Stanton, brother Frank Lee Stanton, and cousins Billy Stanton, Fowler Stanton, Francis Gragg, Evelyn Harding, Wilson Jared, Mable Joyce Presley, and Joe Stanton.
He is survived by his wife Lucy Neil Jared Stanton, son Brett Jared Stanton, daughter in-law Sandra Kay Stanton, and grandson Neil Garland Stanton.
Funeral services will be held at Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home on Sunday, September 18, 2022 at 1:00 pm with internment to follow at Cookeville City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to the God's Grace food pantry at Cookeville First United Methodist Church.
