Gary Michael Halverson

COOKEVILLE CHAPEL - Gary Michael Halverson, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and Vietnam War veteran, passed away suddenly at his residence in Cookeville, Tennessee, on Friday January 16, 2026, at the age of 78. Born on July 1, 1947, in Des Moines, Iowa, Gary lived a life marked by his unwavering dedication to helping others and his deep love for his family.

Gary proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, an experience that shaped his character and commitments. Following his military service, he pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor's degree in English and a Master's in Social Work from San Diego State University. His career as a social worker spanned nearly three decades with the State of California in San Diego and worked with Child Protective Services for the County of Riverside, where he utilized his kind and nurturing personality to profoundly impact the lives of countless individuals and families in need.

He was known for being soft-spoken and always willing to lend a helping hand. His gentle demeanor made him a beloved figure among his colleagues and the many people he served throughout his career.

Gary was a passionate motorcycle enthusiast and a rabid sports fan, with a particular love for Notre Dame athletics. His enthusiasm for sports tied together numerous cherished moments with family and friends, reinforcing the bonds that held them close.

In his personal life, Gary was a devoted husband to Leticia Castro de Halverson, with whom he shared 23 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they cultivated a loving home filled with warmth and compassion. He was the proud father of five children: Ryan Halverson (Monika), Heather Halverson, Lettie Collier, Kristen Collier, and Carson Halverson. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Braedon, Camilla, and Cole Halverson, Memphis and Jackson McEathron, Abigail and Alina Downing, who were the joy of his life.

Gary is survived by his beloved wife, children, brother James Halverson, and grandchildren, all of whom will greatly miss his kindness and wisdom. He is preceded in death by his parents, Richard Leroy Halverson, a Pearl Harbor veteran, and Geneva Gertrude Bell Halverson, who instilled in him the values of service, love, and honor.

A Memorial Mass is being planned and will be announced once complete.
