COOKEVILLE CHAPEL - Gertha Roberson Medley passed away on Wednesday August 26, 2026, at Charter Senior Living in Cookeville, Tennessee. She was born on November 15, 1927, in the Okalona community of Overton County, the daughter of William Winton Breeding and Myrtle Alma Boatman Breeding.
Mrs. Medley received her grade school education at Okalona in Overton County and graduated from Algood School. Over the course of her working life, she was employed in shoe and garment manufacturing. She was also a member of Algood United Methodist Church, a place that reflected the faith and community that were important parts of her life.
She was a woman whose gifts were most often expressed in the warmth she created for others. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting, and she loved her family deeply. Her kitchen was another place where her care was felt by those around her, whether she was making biscuits, baking, cooking, or canning vegetables. Those who knew her also remembered her for making a chocolate pie that everyone was crazy over, a simple but cherished expression of the love she shared so generously.
In December 1948, she married her first husband, Horace B. Roberson, who preceded her in death in 1985. She later married William R. Medley on September 10, 1988, and he preceded her in death in 2018. She was also preceded in death by her parents, William Winton Breeding and Myrtle Alma Boatman Breeding; her sister, Anna Lee Karch; her step-son, Gene Medley; her niece, Theresa Ann Looper; and her nephew, George William Karch.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Maura Little Medley. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, William Robert Medley and his wife, Samantha, and Allison Ogle and her husband, Vince. Her family circle also includes her nieces Phyllis Sue McCloud and her husband, Dennis, Alfreda Ford and her husband, Merrill, Sissy; her nieces Latonya Mott and Sondra Faye Burton; her nephew-in-law, Johnny Looper; and her nephews Patrick King, Kevin King, Terry Fox, and Casey Fox; 4 great nephews, one great niece, four great grandchildren Mila Ogle, Piper Ogle, Kenzi Ogle and Alyssa Medley; and special caretakers, Rita and Lori; They, along with other relatives and friends, carry forward the memory of a woman whose life was marked by devotion to family, faithful work, and the comforts of home.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at Algood United Methodist Church (135 West Main Street, Cookeville, Tennessee) with Pastor Albert Willis officiating.
The family will receive friends on Saturday morning at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service. A reception will immediately follow the service in the fellowship hall at the church.
Gertha Medley will be remembered with love for her steady presence, her caring hands, and the many ways she made life sweeter for those around her.
