COOKEVILLE CHAPEL-James Austin Dalton, a beloved member of the Baxter community, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at his home. Born on September 19, 1925, in Baxter, Tennessee, he lived a life filled with purpose and dedication, leaving a lasting legacy as an entrepreneur and family man.
James proudly served his country during World War II, enlisting in the Navy and later the Marines, where he demonstrated his unwavering commitment to service. After returning home, he established himself as a prominent figure in the transportation industry as the owner of Dalton Bus Service and Dalton Trucking Company. His hard work and determination were evident in his endeavors, earning him respect and admiration from peers and clients alike.
Education was important to James, who attended Baxter Seminary, where he cultivated his natural talents and passion for storytelling. He was well-known for sharing tales from his life and adventures, captivating those around him with his engaging narratives.
James was deeply rooted in his faith, proudly attending the Baxter Church of Christ, which played a significant role in his life. He found fulfillment not only in his career but also in nurturing and spending quality time with his family and friends. His hobbies included traveling, especially with his loved ones, and they will cherish the memories of their journeys together.
He is survived by his son, Charles (Connie) Dalton of Baxter; daughters, Cathy (Ron) Falconberry of LaVergne and Sarah (Bobby) Lane of Algood; and brother, Jack (Jeanette) Dalton of Nashville. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Buddy (Renata) Dalton, Jenny (Josh) Stites, Brent (Laura) Dalton, Jesse (Kelly) Dalton, Joseph (Kelli) Falconberry, Luke Falconberry, Holly (Mike) Freeman, David (Kelsey) Lane, and Austin Lane, as well as his 15 great-grandchildren, who brought him immense joy and pride, Sofia Dalton, Enzo Dalton, Jack Stites, Annie Stites, Jake Stites, Molly Dalton, Anna Claire Dalton, Chase Dalton, Charlie Lane, Cooper Dalton, Cora Lane, Chandler Lane, Owen Freeman, Charlotte Freeman and Arlo Falconberry.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Herman and Minnie Austin Dalton; his beloved wife of 68 years, Lillian Massa Dalton, who passed away on October 14, 2016; sister, Charlie Mae Marshall; and brothers, Billy Joe Dalton and Robert Neal Dalton.
Visitation will be held at Cookeville Chapel, located at 59 N Jefferson Avenue, Cookeville, TN 38501, on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and again on Thursday, May 15, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM with the service starting at 11:00 AM. Bro. Bobby Lane and Bro. Clarence Deloach will officiate the service. Interment with military honors provided by the Veterans Honor Guard will follow in Boiling Springs Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be David Lane, Jesse Dalton, Buddy Dalton, Josh Stites, Austin Lane, Joseph Falconberry, Luke Falconberry and Mike Freeman.
James Austin Dalton will be remembered for his unwavering spirit, unforgettable smile, love for his family, and the incredible impact he made on those fortunate enough to know him.
