James Elden Gatton

October 25, 1941 — June 7, 2024

James Elden Gatton, known affectionately as Jim to his friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2024, in Cookeville, Tennessee. Born on October 25, 1941, in Lansing, Michigan, Jim's life was a testament to his resilience, kindness, and unwavering commitment to his family and community.

Jim's journey began as the cherished son of Robert and Nellie Peterson Gatton, who preceded him in death, as did his beloved daughter, Mary Davis. His legacy continues through his devoted wife of 60 years, Carol Hall Gatton, whom he married on May 10, 1964. Together, they built a life filled with love and dedication. Jim was a proud father to his daughters, Lori Gatton of Cookeville and Jami Hogan of Lansing, Michigan. His sister, Hulda Nofzinger of St. Paul, Minnesota, will fondly remember her brother's warmth and wisdom. Jim's joy was multiplied by his grandchildren, Ian Davis, Caleb Davis, Brendan Preskorn, and Kylie Hogan, who will carry forward his spirit of adventure and curiosity.

Jim's pursuit of knowledge led him to earn a Bachelor's degree in ministry and an associate's degree in drafting and wastewater treatment. His professional life was marked by over 30 years of service with the City of Lansing, where he played a crucial role in protecting the environment by testing water and ensuring that factories did not compromise the water quality with chemicals.

A patriot at heart, Jim served his country honorably for four years (1960-1964) in the Navy, stationed in Florida. During his service, he served aboard the USS Intrepid and the USS Shangri-La, experiences that shaped his character and instilled in him a sense of duty that he carried throughout his life. His faith was an integral part of his existence, and he was a member of the Friendship Church.

Jim's interests were as diverse as they were passionate. A sports enthusiast, he excelled in archery, winning awards in Tennessee and Arizona and securing a championship in the senior division. His studious nature led him to become a history buff, always eager to learn and share his knowledge with others.

In his final months, Jim resided at Cedar Hills Senior Living, where he continued to share his stories and wisdom with those around him. He was able to introduce archery to those at the center who wanted to participate.

A memorial service will be held Monday, June 10, 2024 at 2 PM at Friendship Church, 2990 Line Lick Creek Rd., Cookevile, TN 38501, with Bro. John V. Gentry, Jr. and Bro. Nathan Heady officiating. The family will receive friends Monday 1:30 PM until service time at the church.

As we bid farewell to Jim, we celebrate a life well-lived, and full of purpose. Rest in peace, dear Jim, until we meet again.
