James "Jamo" Ervin

December 25, 1950 — March 9, 2023

Funeral services for Mr. James "Jamo" Thomas Ervin, age 72 of Cookeville, will be held Saturday, March 18, 2023 at 11:00 am in the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Pastor Diantha McLeod will officiate. Military honors will be rendered by the Veterans Honor Guard. Interment will follow in Algood Heritage Cemetery.


His family will receive friends Saturday from 10:00am until service time at the funeral home.


Mr. Ervin died Thursday March 9, 2023 at Bethesda Health Care and Rehabilitation Center.


He was born December 25, 1950 in Cookeville, TN to the late Elease Ervin Peake and stepfather Frank Peake. He attended Swallows Elementary School and Algood Jr. High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Army.


Jamo lived in Indianapolis, Indiana for many years and worked at the Hoosier Dome sporting and event center. He also worked at Tennessee Tech University and at Eastern Foam. He enjoyed time spent with family and friends playing cards and listening to music. He also enjoyed watching sports and westerns on television.


In addition to his mother and stepfather, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Mattie Eunice Ervin; brothers, William "Cobra" Ervin, Frank Peake, Jr. and Carl Lee Peake; and by a devoted aunt and uncle, Thomas and Louise Wells Ervin.


Mr. Ervin is survived by his children, Jamie Hayes, James Ervin Smith, Tiffany (Marcus) Ervin and Destiny Nash; grandchildren, Corin (John) Ervin, Javaun Hayes, Manny Ervin, Tamia Bell and Zach West Hayes; sisters Teresa Ann (Bobby) Smith and devoted sister, Wanda Sue McMurry; a brother, Freddie Peake; an aunt, Mary Alice McClellan; and by nieces and nephews; Greg McMurry, Sheila McMurry, Derek McMurry, Angela McMurry, Christina (Chelsea) Ervin, Devon McMurry, Jade McMurry, Niyah McMurry Ashley Peake, Tara, Jackie, and Tasha Smith, Frankie Peak, III, Porshia Peake, and Ayanna Richmond. He is also survived by bonus children and grandchildren, Emily Ervin, Kimberly (Jason) Bohannon, Markell Ervin, Leaira Ervin, Hope Bohannon and Gavin Bohannon.


Roger Hayes, Freddie Peake, Greg McMurry, Derrick McMurry, Robbie League, Jabbar Jordan, Curtis Hayes, Jason Bohannon, Marcus Pryor and James D Ervin Smith will serve as pallbearers. Michael Mullins, William C. tubbs, James (Poppie Joe) Gist Sr., Robert Jay League, Brandon Paige, Markell Ervin, Gavin Bohannon, Jerry Hayes, Sr., Victor Roberts, Calvin Hayes and Donald C. (Bucket) Hayes, Jr. will serve as honorary pallbearers.
