James West, a cherished family man, respected veteran, and talented woodworker, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2024, surrounded by his loving family at the age of 94 in Baxter, Tennessee. Born on January 28, 1930, in Jackson County, Tennessee, James lived a life marked by devotion to his loved ones, service to his country, and a passion for craftsmanship.
James, affectionately known by those close to him as simply James, dedicated his life to his family and his country. He proudly served as an Army veteran during the Korean Conflict, a period that shaped much of his character and instilled in him a sense of duty and resilience. After his military service, James found his calling in sales, where he spent over two decades at Winell Lee Lumber Company. His work ethic and personable nature made him not just an employee but a valued member of the Winell Lee family.
In his later years, James discovered a love for woodworking, a hobby that allowed him to express his creativity and meticulous nature. He specialized in crafting beautiful cutting boards and bowls, each piece a testament to his attention to detail and artistic flair. His creations were not just objects of utility but of beauty, often becoming cherished gifts for family and friends.
James was a man of many interests, but none so dear to him as the time he spent with his family. He was the patriarch of a large and loving family, which included his daughters, Christy Palmer and Mary Ruth West, daughter-in-law, Rhonda West, all of Baxter. His legacy continued through his grandchildren Aimee Palmer, Brandi Myatt, Andrew Myatt, Jamie West, Toni Paradis, and his great-grandchildren MacKenzee, Hunter, Rylee, Olivia, James, Miranda, Cory, Lauren, Chelsea, Stevie, and Hank. He was also blessed to witness the birth of his great-great-grandchildren Naliyah, Isaiah, Jasiah, Levi, and Lane. The joy and laughter of these young ones brought immeasurable happiness to his later years.
James's life was one of laughter and creativity. His sense of humor was a beacon of light, bringing smiles to all who knew him. He was a storyteller, a joker, and a friend to many. His creative spirit was not only evident in his woodworking but in the way he approached life's challenges and opportunities. He had a knack for making the ordinary extraordinary, a trait that endeared him to all.
Preceding James in death was his beloved wife of 69 years, Joyce Waller West, who passed away on January 11, 2021. Their enduring love story was an inspiration to their family and all who knew them. He was also preceded in death by his son, James "Jimmy" Darryl West, his parents, Silas and Opal Sliger West, his sisters Hilda Christine Vinson and Janet Lee Bush, and his brother Bobby West. The memories of these loved ones continued to be a source of strength and comfort for James throughout his life.

He will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his proud service to his country, and the joy he brought to others through his humor and creative endeavors.
