COOKEVILLE-Dr. Jerry Brown Flatt, a distinguished veterinarian and beloved member of the Cookeville community, passed away on May 4, 2026, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Born on August 26, 1949, in Jackson County, Tennessee, Jerry’s life was marked by dedication to his profession, family, and passions.
Jerry's educational journey began in Old Hickory, Tennessee, where he attended high school. He furthered his education by earning a bachelor's degree from Tennessee Tech University before obtaining his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVm) degree from Auburn University. His academic achievements laid the foundation for a career characterized by excellence and service.
In 1977, Jerry returned to Cookeville and founded the Flatt Veterinary Clinic, a practice that became a pillar of animal care in the region. For over four decades, until his retirement in 2020, he committed himself to the health and well-being of countless animals, earning the respect and admiration of his clients and colleagues alike.
Known for his generous spirit, distinctive character, kindness, and sharp wit, Jerry touched many lives beyond his professional realm. His love for fishing, travel, and music-particularly his earlier years playing the guitar and bass guitar-reflected a multifaceted personality appreciated by those close to him.
Jerry is survived by his sons, Lucas Flatt and his wife Amanda Miller, and Lucas and his wife Meredith Flatt. He also leaves behind beloved grandchildren: Ira Stone Flatt, Susie Flatt, and Spencer Miller. His sister Penny and her husband Lewie Eden of Old Hickory, Tennessee, and his brother Homer Flatt, Jr. also mourn his loss and celebrate his life.
He was preceded in death by his devoted parents, Homer and Edith Brown Flatt; his wife of 51 years, Susan Stone Flatt; his sister, Sharon Walker; and special friend, Danny Midgett. Their memories endure as integral parts of Jerry’s story.
His family will receive friends Saturday, May 9th from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 at Cookeville Chapel of Hooper, Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. A time of sharing will follow at 3:00 p.m.
