Graveside services and interment for Mrs. Kathryn Coward, age 83 of Algood, will be held Tuesday November 10 at 1 p.m. at Overton County Memorial Gardens. E. J. Mackie will officiate. Mrs. Coward's family will receive friends immediately following services at the cemetery. Mrs. Coward died Thursday morning November 5, 2015 at Morningside Assisted Living. She was born January 4, 1932 in Overton County, Tennessee to the late Roy Tramel and Ida Smith Hinds. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Harlan Hinds, two sisters, Verla Gentry and Pauline Keisling. Mrs. Coward attended school in Overton county, graduating from Livingston Academy where she was a star basketball player. She also attended Tennessee Tech University. She worked in Washington D.C. for the Federal Bureau of Investigation prior to her marriage to Sam Coward Jr. on August 24, 1951 at the Midway Christian Church in Pickett County. Devoted to her family, she was a homemaker, Cub Scout Den Mother, Vacation Bible School teacher, teacher at Tennessee Tech Training School, and partner with her husband in their business, Algood Drugs. Mrs. Coward was well-known for her passion for bird-watching. Her love of birds began in childhood, was nurtured by her father, and shared with her husband throughout their married life. Longtime members of the Audubon Society, they traveled to all 50 states, Canada, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico pursuing this interest. One of her favorite pastimes was watching the Eastern Bluebirds as they nested each year in their backyard. In addition to her husband of 64 years, Sam Coward Jr., she is survived by one son, Sam Coward III and wife Wendy of Crosslake Minnesota, one daughter, Mary Kathryn Brady and husband David of Cookeville; a brother, George Kirby Hinds and wife Chiyoko of Smyrna, TN; two sisters, Lucille Huddleston of Grand Rapids, MI and Nellie Diamond of Allons, TN; three grandchildren, David Carter of Pensacola, FL, John Brady of Glasgow, Scotland, and Fiona Hardy and husband Brian of Abingdon, VA, and two great-grandchildren, Samantha Carter and Owen Carter; and several nieces and nephews. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Cookeville Regional Medical Center's Cancer Care Fund, One Medical Center Blvd, Cookeville, TN 38501.
