COOKEVILLE CHAPEL - Katherine Sue Rodgers Filipek, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on Monday November 2, 2026, to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She leaves behind a legacy of love, beautiful memories, and countless lives made better by knowing her.
Kathy was preceded in death by her first husband, Ronald Filipek, with whom she shared 37 years of marriage and cherished memories. She later found love and companionship with her surviving husband, Jim Shaeffer.
She is survived by her daughter, Beth, and son-in-law, Donald Suits; her three beloved grandchildren, Sydney Beth, Griffen, and Grace Suits; and her brother, Bryan Rodgers (Trish).
Kathy was a teacher at heart. During her years at Sycamore Elementary School, affectionately known as “Mrs. Fili” to her students, she gave far more than textbook lessons. She shared her time, creativity, patience, and heart. Teaching was not just her job; it was her passion. Often the first to arrive and the last to leave, she always gave a little extra. She especially loved playing piano for school plays, bringing music and magic to memories her students would cherish.
Although she devoted much of her life to teaching, her greatest love was her family. She was a loving wife and mother and a devoted grandmother affectionately known as “Nano.” Her kindness and compassion extended to everyone around her. She had a special way of making people feel welcomed, valued, and loved.
Kathy also had a love for life and adventure. She enjoyed traveling, discovering new places, and making memories along the way. She had a deep love for animals, whose companionship brought her much happiness.
Gardening was another of Kathy's greatest joys. She found peace in planting, nurturing, and watching things grow. Her garden reflected her spirit: patient, creative, nurturing, and full of life. She had a special gift for creating beauty wherever she went.
Visitation will be held Saturday, November 14, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Pavilion of Cookeville First Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Family and friends are invited to gather to honor and celebrate Kathy's life.
Kathy will be deeply missed by her family, friends, former students, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. The lessons she taught extended far beyond the classroom, and the love she shared will live on in everyone she touched.
Perhaps the greatest measure of her life is found in all the things she helped grow: her students, her family, her friendships, and the gardens she so dearly loved. She spent a lifetime nurturing others, embracing life's adventures, and making the world a more beautiful place.
Her love, creativity, kindness, and adventurous spirit will forever bloom in the hearts of those who loved her.
