Larry Wayne King, loving husband, father and grandfather, legendary Cookeville Barber and youth sports supporter, devoted follower of Jesus and member of Washington Ave Baptist Church, age 75 of Cookeville, died Sunday evening, February 5, 2017 at Bethesda Health Care Center. Funeral services for Larry King will be held Wednesday, February 8th at 1 p.m. at Washington Avenue Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Smith Chapel Cemetery. Rev. Mark Gaw and Bro. Clayton Lee, Jr. will officiate. Mr. King's family will receive friends Tuesday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home and again Wednesday from 11 a.m. until service time at the church. He was born August 6, 1941 in Chester County, TN to the late James and Jewel Roland King. He was a 1960 graduate of Chester County High School and attended Barber School in Memphis following graduation. He met his wife Tommie while working in Bolivar, TN and they were married September 13, 1963 in Henderson. Moving to Cookeville in 1966, Larry began working with Kermit Vickers, a partnership that lasted over 36 years. Larry also joined Washington Ave Church in 1966, and served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and youth leader and in other capacities in the church. He influenced many youth in Cookeville as a little league and softball coach. Larry loved life and enjoyed spending time in his garden. He was a lifelong fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sister, Anida Henderson and by brothers, Kirby King and Raymond King. He is survived by his adoring family, his wife of 53 years, Tommie Roberson King; sons, Patrick (Lillith) King and Kevin King, all of Cookeville; daughter, Latonya (Gary) Mott of Baxter; granddaughters, Madison King and Brittany Mott; brothers, Gorman King and Pascal King, both of Henderson; brother-in-law Jimmy Roberson of Cookeville and nieces and nephews including Casey Fox and Terry Fox. George Boyd, Todd Hudson, Mark Mason, Bill Dobson, Kermit Vickers, Lonnie Donaldson, Billy Mayberry and Grady Bilbrey will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Roy Cooper, Jimmy Mayberry, Solon Sherrill and Roy Gaw. Larry's family wishes to thank the nurses and rehab staff at Bethesda Health for the excellent and loving care given to him.
