COOKEVILLE CHAPEL-Mr. Joseph Leonard Smith, Sr., passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on April 16, 1938, in Reverie, TN, Leonard carried the warmth of his Southern roots throughout his life. He will be remembered not only for his diligent spirit but also for his unwavering love for his family and friends.
Leonard graduated from Belen High School in New Mexico in 1957, setting forth on a journey that would lead him to Tennessee in 1977. He took on the role of electrical supervisor at the Gordonsville zinc mine, where he poured his heart into his work, demonstrating a steadfast commitment that defined both his career and personal life.
Those who knew Leonard cherished his hard-working nature, his honesty, and his love. He had a great sense of humor, often lifting the spirits of those around him. His hobbies included active bowling, golfing, and indulging in his passion for cars as a mechanic-activities that brought him joy and allowed him to connect with others in truly meaningful ways. Traveling was another great love, as he enjoyed exploring new places and making memories with family.
Leonard leaves behind a loving family who will carry his memory forward. He is survived by his children, Rebekah Dively and Deborah Eckenrod, both of Cookeville, Joseph (Michelle) Smith of Johnson City, TN, and Michael Smith of Ashland City, TN. His grandchildren, Laura (Justin) Cercone, Heather (Jon) Gerfen, Melissa (Dalton Glover, Fiance) Dockery, Dana (Tyler) Guinn, Brennan Eckenrod, Rachel (Brad) Cook, Ben (Cayla) Smith, Shannon (Eric) Frantz, and Elizabeth Lappin, will remember their grandfather's loving guidance and the special moments they shared. Leonard was also a cherished great-grandfather to Alex Harris, Emma Cercone, Lanah, Lorelai, and Lincoln Guinn as well as Evelyn Madelyn, and Elliana Franz. He is also survived by his dear sister, Minola Barr Jensen.
Leonard is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Madelyn Kay Bryant Smith, whose love enriched his life, and his parents, Joseph Josh Smith and Bernice Mae Doyle Smith. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Betty Johnston, brothers, Jess Smith, Buford Smith, and Bill Doyle, and his grandson, Kyle Farley.
A graveside service and interment to celebrate Leonard's life will be held on June 20, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. the Cookeville City Cemetery, located at 241 South Walnut Avenue, Cookeville, TN. His son, Rev. Joseph Smith, Jr., will officiate. Visitation will follow the service at the cemetery.
Tyler Guinn, Larry Burt, Adam Smith, Jon Gerfen, Dalton Glover and Justin Cercone will serve as pallbearers.
