Lewis Coomer

COOKEVILLE CHAPEL - Lewis Coomer, a devoted family man and a respected public servant and member of the community, was born on April 5, 1939, in Jackson County, Tennessee. He passed away peacefully on Sunday February 8, 2026, surrounded by his beloved family at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Lewis's work ethic was evident from a young age, beginning his early career as a paperboy in Gainesboro, Tennessee. Throughout his teenage years, he held a position as a butcher at Todd’s Market nearby Tennessee Tech. His professional journey led him to become a draftsman at Browser-Briggs, which eventually became King Corporation, where he served in both Cookeville and Greenville, Tennessee. Lewis continued his entrepreneurial spirit by owning his construction business, specializing in backhoe work for various construction projects. His community recognized his dedication to public service when he was elected six times as the Putnam County Circuit Court Clerk, a role he cherished over his 24 years in office until his retirement.

Retirement brought Lewis immense joy as he immersed himself in gardening, farming, and raising cattle on his multiple farms. His love for agriculture was complemented by a fondness for "big boy farm toys," which he collected and used. In addition to his professional and agricultural pursuits, Lewis cherished moments spent with his family, embarking on beach vacations and road trips across the United States. A testament to his character and devotion, he and his father built a family swimming pool that continues to be enjoyed by his great-grandchildren to this day.

Lewis was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ, faithfully attending the Willow Avenue congregation in Cookeville. His commitment to his faith was unwavering and served as a foundation for his values and actions throughout his life.

He is survived by his ex-wife and faithful partner in life, Pat Coomer, and his beloved daughters, Teresa Coomer Sparks (Larry) and Susan Coomer Galbreath (Dodd). Lewis took great pride in being a grandfather to five grandchildren: Andrew Sparks (Whitney), Jake Sparks (Molly), Carley Sparks Taylor (Jacob), Braden Galbreath (Brynn), and Ailey Galbreath. His legacy is further enriched by five great-grandchildren: Kylie, Magnolia, Mary Kathrine, Wylla Claire, and Georgia. Additionally, he is survived by his nephew Terry Coomer (Lisa) and great niece Heather Coomer Green (Jeremy) and her daughters, Ella and Everly.

Lewis was preceded in death by his father, Floyd Coomer; mother, Mary Inez Davidson Coomer; brother, James Coomer; his wife, Wilma Benson Coomer; and nephew, Jim Coomer.
