COOKEVILLE CHAPEL - Lillian Jewel West, born on August 27, 1937, in Buffalo Valley community of Putnam County, Tennessee, departed this life peacefully at her residence in Nolensville, Tennessee, on Monday May 19, 2025. She was a beloved member of her family and community, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and warmth that will be deeply missed.
Lillian had a distinguished career working at GE in Hendersonville. She also worked as an Inhalation Therapist in respiratory therapy and later worked with UPI in Nashville before enjoying a well-earned retirement. Her contributions to her workplaces were marked by her strong work ethic and dedication.
Known to all for her extraordinary culinary skills, Lillian was a great cook who took pride in preparing meals for her family. She was also regarded as the keeper of the most well-kept and cleanest house, which reflected her meticulous nature and love for her home. Those who entered her home were always greeted by the warmth of her hospitality, and her ability to create a welcoming atmosphere was cherished by family and friends alike. She was especially revered as a caregiver during times of illness, demonstrating her deep love and commitment to those around her.
Her generous spirit extended beyond her culinary talents; Lillian's personality was characterized by kindness, gentleness, and a warm heart. Those who knew her recognized her happy and spunky demeanor, underscoring her courageous approach to life.
Lillian was a devoted member of the Church of Christ, signifying the importance of her faith throughout her life. She approached her faith with the same enthusiasm and dedication she brought to all aspects of her life, guiding her family through its values and teachings.
She is survived by her husband, Leonard West; son, Hugh Smith (Kelley); stepdaughter, Karen Bator; brother, Charles Carr (Mae); sisters, Elsie Watkins and Dorothy McClennon (Freddie); grandchildren, Lily Smith, Jacob Smith, Travonce Smith, Asa Romeo Charles-Ahlen; and great-granddaughter, Ari Smith. Each of them holds cherished memories of Lillian that will be treasured forever.
Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, Haskell and Della Carr; daughter Gloria Charles and siblings, Virgil Carr, Haywood Carr, A.B. Carr, Bill Carr, Mattie Lou Ward, Mary Atkinson, and Ruth Griffin. Though she is no longer with us, her spirit and the love she imparted will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A funeral service honoring Lillian will be at 12 p.m. Saturday May 31 at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. Visitation for friends and family will be Saturday from 11 - 12 p.m. Lillian will be laid to rest at Algood Heritage Cemetery.
