COOKEVILLE CHAPEL - Lucy Neil Jared Stanton, age 95 from Cookeville, TN, passed away Sunday, August 17, 2025 at home. She was born September 4, 1929. She grew up on the family farm at Mount Richardson in the lower or western end of Putnam County where she had many fond memories and stories. She graduated from Smith County High School in 1948. She was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority at the University of Tennessee and graduated from Tennessee Tech University.
On April 18, 1953, she married the love of her life, Garland Stanton. Their marriage lasted 69 years. During which time his career took them to Akron, Ohio, Dallas, Texas, St. Louis, Missouri and Wadsworth, Ohio. Upon retirement in 1985, she followed him "back home" to Cookeville for retirement.
An active participant in her community, she was a proud member of the Cookeville First United Methodist Church where she volunteered her time at the food pantry, the Cookeville Garden Club, Town and Gown and the Bryan Symphony Guild. She is remembered for her commanding personality, eye for fashion and design and being at the center planning any party or gathering.
She is preceded in death by father Ralph Robert Jared, mother Mary Lowe Jared, sister Mary Ralph Maddux, husband Garland Stanton, nephew Freddy Maddux and a group of close cousins Nancy Jarell, Rosemary Haselton, Peggy Wallace, JoAnn Gill and William Harper. She is survived by son Brett Jared Stanton, daughter in law Sandra Kay Stanton, grandson Neil Garland Stanton, nephew Ralph Maddux and close cousin Laura Medley.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 20th at 12:00 p.m. in the Cookeville chapel of Hooper, Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Cookeville City Cemetery. Rev. Chip Hunter will officiate. Her family will receive friends Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Cookeville First United Methodist Church Food Panty.
