Madelyn Kay Smith, a loving and gentle soul, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2023, at NHC of Cookeville. Born on February 25, 1941, in Los Angeles, CA, Madelyn was a beacon of selflessness and love to all who knew her.


Madelyn was the beloved wife of Leonard Smith, whom she married on January 17, 1958, in Lordsburg, NM. Their enduring love story spanned an impressive 65 years, serving as a testament to their unyielding devotion to each other. Madelyn was a devoted mother to her children, Becky Dively and Debbie Smith, both of Cookeville, Joe (Michelle) Smith of Johnson City, TN, and Michael Smith of Ashland City, TN. She was a cherished grandmother to Laura (Justin) Cercone, Heather (Jon) Gerfen, Melissa Dockery, Dana (Tyler) Guinn, Brennan Eckenrod, Rachel (Brad) Cook, Ben (Cayla) Smith, Shannon (Eric) Frantz and Elizabeth Lappin. Madelyn was also blessed with several great-grandchildren.


Madelyn was preceded in death by her parents, David Bryant and Mary Pooler Bryant, and her grandson, Kyle Farley. Despite these losses, she remained a steadfast pillar of strength and resilience, her faith never wavering.


Throughout her life, Madelyn was a dedicated homemaker, creating a warm and welcoming space for her family and friends. Her home was a place of love, laughter, and countless cherished memories. Madelyn's selfless nature shone through in her unwavering dedication to her family, always putting their needs before her own.


A woman of deep faith, Madelyn attended Life Church in Cookeville and formerly attended Hope Church in Algood. She was known for her strong belief in God and lived her life as a testament to her faith. Madelyn was a godly woman who radiated kindness and love, touching the lives of everyone she met.


Madelyn was a loyal and loving wife, a sweet soul who enriched the lives of those around her. Her gentle spirit and caring nature made her a joy to be around, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Madelyn's legacy of love, selflessness, and gentleness will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and friends.


Funeral services honoring Madelyn will be at 11 a.m. Thursday October 5 at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. Her son, Rev. Joe Smith will officiate. Interment will follow at Cookeville City Cemetery. Her family will welcome friends Wednesday from 5 - 8 p.m. and again Thursday from 10 a.m. until service time.
