COOKEVILLE CHAPEL - Margaret Sue Loftis, age 90, of Cookeville, Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday October 27, 2026, at her home, surrounded by her family and loved ones.
She was born on May 30, 1936, in Jackson County, Tennessee, to the late John and Brina Phann. She graduated from Jackson County High School and, shortly thereafter, married the late Taylor “Jazbo” Loftis.
Together, they had four children: Kathy (Jim) Baggett of Overton County, Tennessee; Pam (Rick) Reed of Cookeville, Tennessee; Robbi (Daniel) Adams of Cookeville, Tennessee; and Phillip (Julana) Loftis of Silver Point, Tennessee. They were also blessed with five grandchildren: Will (Jada) Reed, Tiffany Reed, Amanda (Jonathan) Pryor, Jacob Adams, and Jonathan Loftis; and three great-grandchildren: Christopher Reed, Taylor Reed, and Julien Pryor. Her children - especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren - were her greatest joy.
She is survived by her sister, Katherine Hix; her brother-in-law, Robert Loftis; her sister-in-law, Mary Loftis; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her special friend, James Kinnaird; her father- and mother-in-law, Lester and Vada Loftis; her sister, Betty Jo (James) Lynn; her brother, Jack (Linda) Phann; her brothers-in-law, Junior Hix, Ralph (Max) Loftis, Harold (Ella) Loftis, and William (Pat) Loftis; and her sister-in-law, Ovella Loftis.
Margaret Sue was a longtime member of Smyrna Church of Christ, where her faith in Jesus was strengthened by the cherished fellowship of the congregation. She worked for 30 years at Jere Whitson Elementary as a Title I aide, and the friendships she formed there were very dear to her. In retirement, she enjoyed attending gospel meetings with her friend Faye Davis, going to the Dodson Branch fish fries with her friend James, and, most especially, mowing her large yard on her zero-turn John Deere lawn mower.
When Margaret Sue needed caregiving assistance, she was particularly blessed by the following women, who not only cared for her but also loved her: Tina Brown, Cathy Reeder, Francis Reeder, Cyndi Smith, Dara Tipton, and Angie Vaughn. She and her family cannot fully express how much these ladies meant to them. The family would also like to thank the Gentiva Hospice team who assisted and guided the family through the last few months of her life.
A memorial service honoring Margaret Sue will be Friday October 30, 2026 at 1:00 pm in the Smyrna Church of Christ with Bro. James Rogers officiating. Interment will follow at Smyrna Cemetery. Her beloved grandchildren and nephews will serve as pallbearers.
Her family will receive friends Friday October 30, 2026 from 11:00 am until time of service at the Smyrna Church of Christ (3698 Dodson Branch Rd) and again on Thursday October 29, 2026 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper, Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home (59 N Jefferson Ave).
Margaret Sue was a funny, feisty, and loving Christian woman. She will be deeply missed until we see her again.
