Melvin June Martin, 93, went to be with the Lord October 8, 2021, in Cookeville, Tennessee. He was a good son, brother and uncle, and his family and friends will remember him as a man who was fearlessly independent, not afraid of hard work, ran the road looking after others as long as he was able and loved God’s handiwork in the nature that surrounded him. He was born in Putnam County and went north to Detroit to find work as a teenager; after he retired he returned home and rarely left Tennessee for more than a day or two at a time after that. A lifelong bachelor, he preferred home - with his family and friends - to much of anything else the world had to offer. Melvin was predeceased by his parents Samuel and Vallie Martin, of Putnam County, his brothers Shelah and Schuyler and sisters Ida Williams and Gladys Maddux, nieces Mary Ellen Cook and Peggy Gunter and nephews Carroll and Carmen Martin. He is the grandson of James W. and Celia (Elrod) Martin, Elijah J. and Sarah (Mahan) Carr, all of Putnam County. He is survived by nephews Vernon and Jim Williams, niece Faye Cathers and a host of great-nieces and nephews who simply called him Uncle Mel. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 16th, at the Dyer chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home, and interment will follow at Allison Cemetery in Putnam County, Tennessee, where he invested much time and money caring for the final resting places of his ancestors and extended family. Friends are invited to pay their respects and sign the guest book 5-7 p.m. Friday and 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Due to COVID-19 precautions, social distancing measures will be observed. Dyer Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
