Paul Curtis Burgess, a devoted man of faith and decorated United States Army veteran, passed away suddenly on Wednesday July 9, 2025 at the age of 79. Paul’s life was marked by unwavering courage, deep love for God, and steadfast service to his country and community.
Born October 6, 1945 in Detroit, Michigan. Paul was raised in a faith-filled home where he learned early the values of integrity, compassion, and service. These values would shape the course of his life, guiding him through both triumphs and trials.
Paul served with honor in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He displayed extraordinary bravery in combat, earning two Purple Hearts for wounds sustained while protecting his fellow soldiers. His service to the nation, marked by heroism and sacrifice, reflected the strength of his character and the depth of his commitment to others.
Beyond the uniform, Paul was known for his warm spirit, generous heart, and unwavering belief in God. His faith was the cornerstone of his life, and he inspired many with his trust in God’s plan, even in the face of adversity.
Paul is survived by a sister, Joyce (Jack) Stewart; and a brother, Henry (Judy) Burgess; as well as a host of extended family and friends who will cherish his memory.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Mayme Burgess; his sister Wanda Fay Jurkiewicz and his brother-in-law, Joseph Jurkiewicz.
A service honoring Paul’s life will be held on Tuesday July 15th at 11:00 am at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Visitation for friends and family will be from 10 -11 a.m.. Interment with military honors will take place at Howard Cemetery in Cookeville, where he will be laid to rest with the dignity and honor he so richly deserves.
