COOKEVILLE CHAPEL - Philip Eugene Craighead was born on August 7, 1953, in Athens, Tennessee. He passed away peacefully on Sunday January 11, 2026, at his residence in Cookeville, surrounded by so much love. He is leaving behind a remarkable legacy as a dedicated music educator and a loving family man.
With an esteemed career that spanned over 49 years, Phil was a passionate music educator within the Putnam County School System, where he inspired countless students at Upperman High School and Cane Creek Elementary School. He graduated from Tennessee Tech University with a bachelor's degree in Music Education and later earned a master's degree in Education. Throughout his life, he remained a proud alumnus of the Tennessee Tech University's marching band, a testament to his unwavering love for music.
Phil was not only a devoted educator but also a cherished member of the Cookeville Community Band and the Cumberland County Community Band, where he shared his passion for music with his community. His loving, considerate, and thoughtful demeanor made him a favorite among peers and students alike. Known for his sharp wit and humor, he always had a joke ready to lighten the mood.
A lifelong member of the Collegeside Church of Christ, Phil's faith in Jesus Christ was integral to who he was. He also held membership in the Cookeville Masonic Lodge No. 266 F&AM, where he fostered friendships and community spirit.
Phil is survived by his loving wife, Sandra McCloud Craighead; his daughters, Rachel and Emily Craighead; as well as his brothers, Donald Craighead and Jerrell Craighead, alongside his sister-in-law, Gerry.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Durelle Craighead and Mildred Moon Craighead; his wife of almost 34 years, Janet Swann Craighead; his daughter, Rebecca Craighead; and his brother, Charles Craighead.
A funeral service honoring Phil will be at 11 a.m. Friday January 16 at Collegeside Church of Christ. Bro. Bruce McLarty will officiate. Visitation for friends and family will be Thursday from 5 - 8 p.m. at the church and again Friday from 9 - 11 a.m. at the church. Phil will be laid to rest at Crest Lawn Cemetery.
Phillip Eugene Craighead's contributions to education and music, along with his deep commitment to family and community, will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
