Phyllis Jean Stinson

COOKEVILLE CHAPEL - Phyllis Jean Stinson passed away on Friday May 9, 2025, at the age of 85. She cherished her family most of all. Phyllis is survived by her daughter Stacey (Jeff) Plant, grandchildren Rebecca (Matt) Rezny, Rachael (Trae) Stiles, Rochelle (Marc) Lawson, and Stephen (Hayley) Crook. She adored all nine of her great-grandchildren, Gavin, Mady, Kevi, Lydia, Hadley, Tova, Marc III, Lillian, and Magnus. She is also survived by her niece Connie Larm and nephew Chris Cornish.

Phyllis loved cooking a feast with the tastiest roast beef, which her daughter and grandchildren have not been able to replicate, but they will keep trying. Her fine crochet skills will keep the family warm with afghans and adorable stuffed bunnies. She taught her grandchildren to play many card games, such as Spades, Canasta, and Pinochle, all of which were fond memories from her own childhood.

Phyllis was born on October 2, 1939, in Decatur, Illinois, and was preceded in death by her father, Wayne Scheibly, mother Alice Scheibly, and sister Anita Crews of Boonville, Missouri. The four of them were a tightly knit family full of love and laughter. Memories of her high school days would remind you of the old TV show Happy Days.

Phyllis began her Court Reporting career in the early 1960s in Overland Park, Kansas, as a transcriptionist working her way up to reporting for the State Legislature in Kansas City, Missouri. Her fondest memories were of colleagues who became lifelong friends. The milestone she recalled most often was reporting many depositions during the building of Arrowhead Stadium, home to the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs. She declares that the stadium would never have been built without her. Phyllis inherited her father’s gift for embellishing stories. Feisty to say the least, she was known to rattle a courtroom to keep proceedings on track for the sake of the record. Phyllis enjoyed freelance court reporting in Cookeville, TN, and surrounding areas from the early 1990s.
