Raymond "Indian" Tallent

COOKEVILLE CHAPEL-IN LOVING MEMORY of Raymond Nashaw "Indian" Tallent a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. A true Jack of all trades passed away peacefully on November 05, 2026 at his home in the Spring Creek Community. Born February 24, 1944 Raymond lived a full and meaningful life rooted in faith, family and hard work.

A native of Cookeville his family moved to Kentucky for work where he graduated school and joined the Air Force from 1962-1966. He moved his family back to Tennessee in 1972, where he built his life and left a lasting legacy. He was an incredibly hard worker who dedicated his life to public service and farming. In 1999, he retired from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department and went on to spend 15 years working on his sawmill. He was an electrician, a lineman, setting up lights at local ball fields, a “jack of all trades” and a man who could build or fix anything. He was a passionate outdoorsman who found peace and joy on the water. Some of his family’s fondest memories include trips to the lake on his “redneck boat” and going tubing. He also loved traveling, especially making trips to Louisiana and Oklahoma to visit family. On the farm he was in his element, tending to crops of soybeans, corn and hay and caring for his horses, cows, dogs, cats, goats, chickens, and pigs. Every animal he owned was deeply connected to him, he truly had a special way with animals and children. He loved kids and kids love him right back. To his children he was a firm but deeply loving guide. He held his children to high expectations. If their grades were high enough, they got to miss a day of school, but they were expected to get up and work in the field day. He taught them an unwavering work ethic, but more importantly their daddy taught them to love people and to respect everyone. He loved his own parents deeply, sharing a cup of coffee with them every single day.

A man of faith, he also shared his heart with his community, teaching the Sunday school class for a time at Douglas Chapel. Above all, Raymond loved to share his past experiences, captivating everyone, with stories that were incredibly funny and wonderfully unbelievable. He is survived by his beloved blended family, his wife of 27 years, Peggy; his children, Charlie Lee (Earlene) Tallent, Sharon (Gene) Underwood, Debbie (Brian) Williams, Sally (Donnie) Benson; his grandchildren, Levi (Kenya) Peterson, Denise (Josh) Branson, Dalton (Alliah) Underwoood, Cody (Sabrina) Vickers, Ryan (Brandy) Vickers, Ethan (Janessa) Rodgers, Augustus (Kimy) Rodgers, Aron (Analynn), Steckel, Faith (Tyler) Dixon, Callie Benson and Eli Benson; and by his great grandchildren, Karly, Lyla, Nashaw, Oaklynn, Sadie Jean, Ellie Jo, Waylond, Houston, and Raelynn.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, Charlie Lee and Iva Lee Tallent; and by his sister, Delaine Tallent Brooks.
